Every year, Christmas is celebrated with lights, gifts, music, and happiness. Many people enjoy the cheerful mood, and some Muslims may wonder why they should not join in. Since Jesus (peace be upon him) is respected in Islam, it may seem harmless to celebrate his birth. However, Christmas is not just a fun holiday. It is a religious event based on beliefs that are different from Islamic teachings.
The main reason Muslims do not celebrate Christmas is because it is linked to the belief that Jesus (peace be upon him) is the son of God or God Himself. Islam clearly teaches that Allah is One and has no son. The Holy Quran explains that Jesus was a great prophet and messenger of Allah, born in a special way, but he was still a human being. Because Christmas celebrates beliefs that go against this core Islamic belief, Muslims cannot take part in it.
Another reason is that many Christmas traditions come from ancient pagan festivals. Long before Christianity, people in Europe celebrated the winter solstice and worshipped the sun around the same time of year. Later, some of these customs were mixed into Christmas celebrations. This includes things like decorating trees, lighting candles, and other traditions. Islam teaches Muslims to stay away from practices connected to idol worship, even if they seem harmless today.
Islam also does not encourage celebrating the birthdays of prophets. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), even though he is the final prophet of Islam, never had his birthday celebrated by his companions or early Muslims. In the same way, the early followers of Jesus (peace be upon him) did not celebrate his birth either. This shows that celebrating prophets’ birthdays is not part of true religious practice.
There is also strong evidence that Jesus (peace be upon him) was not born on 25 December. The Bible describes shepherds watching their flocks outdoors, which usually happens in warmer months. The Holy Quran mentions that Mary gave birth near a palm tree with fresh dates, which do not grow in winter. Many Christian scholars also believe Jesus was born in late summer or early autumn, not in December.
Lastly, Islam teaches Muslims to protect their religious identity. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned Muslims not to copy the religious practices of other faiths. This does not mean Muslims should be rude or disrespectful. Muslims should be kind, polite, and respectful to everyone. But they should also feel confident in their own faith and follow Islamic teachings with pride, without feeling pressured to fit in.
